Pre-Dissertation Fellowships

FLAS

This program provides academic year and summer fellowships to institutions of higher education to assist graduate students in foreign language and either area or international studies. The goals of the fellowship program include: (1) to assist in the development of knowledge, resources, and trained personnel for modern foreign language and area/international studies;(2) to stimulate the attainment of foreign language acquisition and fluency; and (3) to develop a pool of international experts to meet national needs. FLAS fellowships at UW-Madison are admistered by programs of the International Institute.

NSF Graduate Research Fellowships

Difficult to obtain and by definition very "science" oriented--most awards are in the hard sciences. The upshot is that after the awards are announced you are allowed to review your ranking sheets, which usually contain written feedback.

David L. Boren Graduate Fellowships

The National Security Education Program (NSEP ) David L. Boren Graduate Fellowships enable U.S. graduate students to pursue specialization in area and language study or to add an international dimension to their education. Boren Fellowships support students pursuing the study of languages, cultures, and world regions that are critical to U.S. national security but are less frequently studied by U.S. graduate students, i.e., areas of the world other than Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. It is hoped that recipients of Boren Fellowships will comprise an ever-growing cadre of experts whose enriched educational and professional experiences will enable them to provide leadership and direction in our national commitment to economic growth, international peace and security, and the promotion of democracy abroad.
