Travel Grant for SLA PhD Majors

The SLA Program and Language Institute are pleased to offer small travel grants for SLA majors to present at academic conferences or to collect data for the dissertation.  The number of grants and amount of awards is limited.

In 2009-10, the SLA Executive Committee invites applications submitted by November 15, 2009, for travel that is anticipated, planned or has already taken place from June 1, 2009 – May 31, 2010.  (The dates for the grant period are related to the university’s fiscal year, to ensure that we are able to spend the full amount that the program is allocated each year in support of graduate student research.)

Students may submit applications for conference papers that have been accepted, papers that have been submitted but are still under review, or papers that they intend to submit.  Students applying for support for travel related to dissertation research are only eligible to apply after the dissertation proposal is approved.

Applications may be submitted after the November 15 deadline, but, given the limited amount of funds for this program, cannot be prioritized for an award.

Eligibility

SLA PhD majors are eligible to apply for the SLA Travel Grant.

Description

The grant will reimburse students for expenses directly related to traveling to and attending the conference, or to traveling to collect data for dissertation research. These include:

The amount of the grant will vary based on the number of awards. Students should not expect that the grant will cover the full cost of attending a conference. The program can only reimburse students for travel expenses that fall within the University guidelines. These guidelines, along with lodging and meal maxima, are detailed online at: http://www.uwsa.edu/fadmin/travel.htm

Students must submit original receipts for all expenses.

Criteria for evaluating applications

  • Importance of the travel for the student’s academic program
  • Demonstrated attempts to apply for other sources of funding such as the Vilas Travel Fellowship
  • Previous funding through the grant program (students who have received the award in the past will be less likely to receive it again)

To apply

To apply for the SLA Travel Grant to give a paper at a conference, students should submit the following to Dianna Murphy by November 15. Contact Dianna if you are applying for a Travel Grant to support dissertation research.

  • Name
  • Conference title and dates
  • Title of paper
  • Note on other sources of funding secured or applied for
