About the Program

The SLA Doctoral Program at the UW-Madison welcomes applications from students from a wide range of backgrounds including foreign languages, English, linguistics, applied linguistics, and education.

Detailed information on the requirements for the degree can be found in the Student Handbook.

Admission to the program is highly competitive. We strongly recommend that prospective applicants carefully review all of the information on this website, and become familiar with the areas of expertise and research interests of the faculty affiliated with the program. Applicants are also strongly encouraged to contact faculty with whom they might work to discuss interests and possibilities for funding.

What Can I Do With A Degree in SLA?

A doctorate degree in Second Language Acquisition allows you to pursue a career in many different fields, including linguistics, language planning and policy, language program direction and administration and foreign language teaching. Many of the Ph.D. degree recipients will seek poisitions with an SLA research emphasis. They will also seek careers in language education or will work as coordinators or directors of language programs, especially at the post-secondary level.

Follow the links below for information on admissions requirements and procedures. Contact SLA Co-Director Sally Magnan to discuss your academic preparation and objectives, or with questions about the program. Contact SLA Program Coordinator Dianna Murphy about the process of applying.
