The minimum requirements for admission are as follows.
1. All applicants to the SLA Doctoral Program must meet the minimum requirements for admission established by the Graduate School. In addition to those materials the Graduate School requires, the SLA Program requires that applicants submit GRE scores. The GRE examination must be taken within 5 years before your application to the SLA Doctoral Program.
2. The SLA Doctoral Program requires a Masters degree in a foreign language, English, applied linguistics, linguistics, or education. (Contact SLA Director Cathy Stafford if your M.A. is in a field other than one listed here.)
3. Students seeking admission to the program with a specific language concentration are required to demonstrate oral proficiency in that language.
4. Upon entering the program, most students will have completed one graduate-level course in methods of teaching a foreign or second language, one graduate-level course in linguistics, and one course with a substantial research component.
International applicants to the UW-Madison are required to have sufficient funds to cover their expenses completely while attending the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
