A Slavic linguist by training, Murphy’s current research interests are primarily in postsecondary foreign language teaching and learning. In 2017, she is completing a report on the gender and ethno-racial distribution of recipients of U.S. Bachelor's degrees in languages and literatures other than English, and preparing an article on the perception of graduating seniors on the outcomes of foreign language majors. Her recent projects have explored Language Flagship programs in the United States, student perspectives on language learning, approaches for preparing and mentoring postsecondary instructors of less commonly taught languages (LCTLs), and the long-term impact of study abroad on the global engagement of university alumni.
