Overview
The PhD Program in Second Language Acquisition is pleased to announce the 2024-25 Student Travel and Research Award competition, the purpose of which is to provide SLA Program doctoral students with financial support for expenses related to travel to conferences or dissertation research. Awards are competitive, and priority will be given to students presenting at conferences or dissertators with approved proposals. Research funds are primarily for travel, but we have a small amount of funds that may be used for other research expenses such as paying research participants.
What can the award be used for?
Conference-related expenses: Can include costs associated with travel and conference fees. Priority will be given to students who will be presenting but, depending on available funds, we would also (exceptionally) consider funding those who wish to (only) attend a conference.
Research-related expenses: Can include costs associated with research travel (e.g., for data collection) and payments to research participants and statistics consultants, materials, and other dissertation research related activities (must have IRB-approved proposal).
Please note that you cannot be awarded support more than once per academic year, and limited funding resources will require awards to be capped. The amount of the awards will depend on available resources and the number of meritorious applications received. You should not expect that an award will cover all expenses incurred and, as always, you are strongly encouraged to apply for additional financial support through other funding sources such as the Graduate School’s Student Research Grants Competition.
To be eligible for an award, expenses must be/must have been incurred between the following dates:
September 15, 2024-May 15, 2025 (for Nov. 15, 2024 deadline)
February 15, 2025 -September 14, 2025 (for April 11, 2025 deadline)
Please note that awards will be made either through reimbursement or a direct purchase by using a department card. It is strongly suggested that awardees meet with the Language Institute accountant Pang Thao to review University purchasing policies and procedures. Please note that expense reports should be submitted within 90 days of the event or the expenses will not be reimbursed. Flight tickets can be reimbursed only if booked through the University’s Concur system.
How do I apply?
